this is my ada.

lovely and amazing.
ada came out kicking and screaming
and didn't stop until she was eighteen months.
she slept through the night for the FIRST time
when she was two.
she hears every word i say
even when she is fully engaged
with polly pocket
and i am three rooms away on the phone.
she memorizes books and
songs and
nursery rhymes for a hobby.
she is incredibly imaginitive.
she loves-
to sing realllllly loud
to read books
to paint
to snuggle
to play dress up
to eat lollipops
she is the messiest and slowest eater you have ever seen.
she hates baked goods except chocolate chip cookies and cupcake frosting.
she is incredibly loving
and she is mine, all mine.

and the winner is...

dear anonymous parenting magazine,

whomever's idea it was to ensure that your preschooler does not win every game she plays, clearly does not have a 3 1/2 year old named ada. after playing the 1000th round of chutes and ladders/the ladybug game/candyland (oh wait, not candyland, as ada has officially chewed up several of the candy cards), i finally won! i did it for the betterment of my child. no, i did not brag or rub it in, i just made it to home base first. quietly and serenely.

it will never happen again. my daughter lost it. she screamed "i don't want to be a loser" for twenty minutes. tears flowed. i tried reasoning with her. i reassured her that she was still a "winner". but really i just learned that she will win every game i play with her until further notice. or maybe forever.

sincerely,
courtney

exhaustion

last night elias was asleep at 6:50. ada went to bed at 7. yes, 7pm. at 6:55 she told me she wanted to go to sleep. exhaustion. for those of you who don't know, my kids do not like to sleep, nor do they need as much sleep as other children. but the past week has been a whirlwind of excitement and chaos.

we all flew to roanoke virginia for a job interview. it took twelve hours to get there, and ada had a huge pee-pee accident when the plane was delayed in the deboarding process (the familiar scene of all the people eagerly standing in the aisle waiting to get off, yet the door just doesn't open, and you can't get through the aisle to the potty). she was humiliated, as was i, since we were both saturated.

thursday we checked out a cool little performance called "fantasyland" at the roanoke history museum. ada and elias spent 45 whole minutes with mr. santa claus himself. ada sang songs while santa played the guitar, listened to stories about his life, and sat on his lap, while elias transported every object in the room to different places while santa watched. lets all hope he is not on the naughty list! uncle kevin was so wonderful and drove all the way up to join us for the day thursday and even babysit that night so reza and i could go out to dinner with the other surgeons in the practice.

once reza was finished with interviews friday we took the kids to see all the christmas trees at the hotel roanoke. ada loved them! elias tried to destroy them! it was so beautifully decorated! then we went next door and played in the museum of art (i know what you are thinking-- roanoke has an art museum?? roanoke had everything, just on a smaller scale than big cities!) when we came out of the museum, it was snowing!

and it just kept snowing. that was the rest of our trip, stuck in a hotel, while at least 12 inches of snow fell. and fell. and fell. then, ada got sick. and sicker. then elias got a cold. and ada was still sick. luckily, amidst the snow and illness, some wonderful people (family of friends of ours -- does that make sense?) came and picked us up at our hotel, in their 4-wheel drive, and took us to their house for a wonderful dinner and insightful conversation about roanoke. elias tried hard to destroy their christmas ornaments, and their kitchen, and torment their dog, while ada lay on the couch watching tv. reza and i had a delightful time.

so exhaustion has set in. ada is still in bed after almost 12 hours. first time ever. best thing ever!

mud and gingerbread

it started with a stomp, then he went in for a bath. mud is therapeutic right?

yesterday we made gingerbread houses. here's ada with her finished product.

christmas card outtakes

sibling love

santa's little helpers

who dat?

do you see the marshmallow elias swiped?

i never dreamed it would be so hard to get a picture of my two kids for a christmas card. three days, six attempts, over 100 pictures later we got one. with the help of a friend. on her neighbor's swing. who would have guessed.

mission accomplished

a trip to santa's woods

so excited to find a tree!

but i want this one!

love. and tractor rides.

hunting.

cookies!

lunch at cush's.

putting the star on.

we went on a christmas tree hunt yesterday. yes, we went to a little farm in the louisiana countryside to cut down a fresh tree to decorate in our home. we were surprised to arrive and see fields of cypress trees perfectly manicured into conical shapes. louisianians have a different vision of a christmas tree than bostonians or even north carolininians. luckily, we found a few rows of loblolly pines (think charlie brown's christmas). ada picked out the perfect one. unfortunately it was about thirty feet tall. she still can not understand why it wouldn't fit on the car. so, we settled on a nice full, bushy tree that will do its job and fill our house with a wonderful christmas aroma. we are still waiting for birds to fly out of it, or even a squirrel or two to appear in the house, but it is lovely and amazing.

next stop- santa's lap.
